The Congregational Federation of Australia was constituted by decision of representatives of the Congregational Federation of New South Wales and the Queensland Congregational Fellowship meeting at Bonny Hills in northern New South Wales from Monday 7th to Wednesday 9th September 1992.

It was further resolved that an Assembly should be held at two-year  intervals with the first being constituted at Ashfield, Sydney, in March 1994.

Since that time the Federation has admitted New Zealand Churches into membership and, at the request of representatives of those Churches, the Biennial Assembly of March 2006 meeting in Sydney resolved that the New Zealand Churches be constituted as the Congregational Federation of Aotearoa New Zealand.

As a consequence of that decision the 2006 Assembly resolved to establish

an “umbrella” body to be constituted as the

Congregational Federation of Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand.

The function of this Federation is to serve the Churches of the Congregational Federations in Australia and in New Zealand by co-ordinating and undertaking such activities as concern and involve both, by representing them at an international level and by undertaking such other activities as may be determined from time to time.

In October 2013 the Tenth Bi-ennial Assembly of the Federation meeting in Sydney unanimously resolved to delete the word “Aotearoa” from its name amending it to read the “Congregational Federation of Australia and New Zealand”.

It is through membership of the Congregational Federation of Australia

and New Zealand that we express our belief that we are

One in Christ”.
